Kawarau Jet News July 2009

Dear John,

Welcome to another newsletter from Kawarau Jet Rotorua.

It has been a very busy winter and even with the spell of cold weather it has not put passengers off experiencing thrills and spills on the Rotorua lakes.

Water Warriors Combo

Kawarau Jet Rotorua is excited to introduce a new combo called "Water Warriors".

In the 1300’s the Maori Explorer Ihenga discovered the Rotorua Lakes while looking for delicacies for his pregnant wife. Now visitors to Rotorua can learn some of the history with a very modern twist by embarking on the new Water Warriors Combo.

Participants start at the Rotorua Lakefront where you board the Kawarau Jet, and feel the force of a Chevy 350 V8 and experience the world renowned Hamilton spins. Take in historical landmarks as you travel at speed across Lake Rotorua to the Ohau channel.

Now its time for a complete change of pace as you experience Maori Culture at its best with Mana Adventures. Embark on a cultural journey of discovery as you paddle an authentic Maori canoe (Waka) on the calm and tranquil waters of the Ohau Channel. Listen to stories of the past as you glide past historical landmarks then twist and turn through passages of native bush. As you head into the open waters of Lake Rotoiti and down the Okere Arm to the start of the Kaituna River get ready to demonstrate your newly acquired warrior skills with an exhibition of various paddle techniques, salutes and chants.

Now it’s time for a different craft and another change of pace as you join River Rats Rafting for the trip of a lifetime down the Kaituna River. After some paddle and safety training it’s time to head down river through an amazing tree lined gorge and over the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall, the awesome 7 metre Tutea Falls. On the Kaituna around 70% of customers are first time rafters. It is fine for adventurous beginners you just need to be comfortable with the idea that around 1 boat in 20 will flip at the main waterfall. The waterfall runs out into a large pool so there is time to get the boat upright and get everyone back in.

After the rafting, River Rats will take you to their base to get changed and transfer you back to the Rotorua lakefront or your accommodation.

In total the trip takes around 4 – 4½ hours and at a cost of $230 per person it represents great value for money. A minimum of 8 people are needed and a maximum of 48 can be catered for. Trips can be booked through Kawarau Jet Rotorua, Mana Adventures or River Rats Rafting. All 3 operators are Qualmark endorsed and members of the Rotorua Sustainable Tourism Charter.
